Life without Sports — Is it Possible???

I’m a guy who loves sports — playing and watching. A typical night for me is to snuggle up on my easy chair with my laptop, turn on the TV, then watch a Red Wings game while I catch up on email or Facebook if I’m not searching for good content to post, working on a Facebook ad or website design.

Enter the corona-virus and my world stops, almost. Like you, my life is in a state of disarray because of this pandemic. We don’t know the magnitude of the impact of this virus yet in the U.S. so our country is in a temporary lock-down of all sporting events. No NHL hockey games, NBA basketball games, Big Ten Tournament or March Madness. No MLB spring training and no high school spring sports. Nothing, zip, zilch, nada.

What are we going to do during our “free” time as a sports fan?

As much as it’s easy to fall into the trap of bitching and moaning like most others about the state of our affairs, I recommend an alternate path. In fact, I demand it for your own sanity.

Why not use this time productively?

Take the time to sit down and get your taxes done. It always feels great to get that monkey off your back. Clean out the upper shelf in your front entry room closest where stuff keeps falling on your head every time you open the door because it’s so full.

How about that cupboard in the kitchen where you’ve been stuffing things because you don’t know where to put it? Take time to organize and discard.

What about that book you bought that you desperately want to read but have not been able to squeeze it in? Squeeze away!

Have you talked about getting back to a regular exercise routine but that’s all its been, talk? Now’s the time to get down and make it happen.

For me, writing is a passion. But like many worthwhile activities, it takes time and effort, which is why I haven’t been writing enough. At least not for my satisfaction. Other activities that are much easier and take little brain power have taken its place. Other activities related to sports — preparing for, watching, and playing.

Therefore, I plan to use this extra time to write, and write, and write. Then before I know it, we will have this corona-virus under control…and my life will be too, even without sports.
